Pedestrians on Our Roads

It’s no secret that pedestrians are all over our roads today. We see them bike, roller blade, skateboard, walk, run, and even hoverboard along the sidewalks and streets, doing their best to get from one point to another. These pedestrians are more than welcome to share the road with drivers, and in fact it is encouraged that we have even more pedestrians on our roads as the years go on to improve general health and encourage cleaner transportation. Pedestrians are important to our communities for many reasons, so it’s important we do our best to keep these people as safe as possible as they commute.

One of the ways we as a society work to keep pedestrians safe is by making laws for everyone to follow when it comes to navigating our roads. Specifically for pedestrians, laws on where and how they can cross the streets they follow is important because it sets up the rules for how cars and pedestrians will interact. These rules are important, and so when they are not followed, accidents are sure to follow, which means injuries are not far behind. For everyone’s safety, it’s important that where pedestrians cross be followed and respected, that way no one is injured beyond their means.

Where Can Pedestrians Cross Safely?

Just like cars have lanes of travel and rules that they must follow, pedestrians also have rules that apply to them. Specifically, pedestrian’s rules for crossing roads are:

What Legal Crossings Are Available for Pedestrians?Designated crosswalks: Designated crosswalks are seen all over the world, though they all have their unique looks. These areas are specifically made for pedestrians so that they may cross safely. When a pedestrian is in a crosswalk, vehicles must yield to them, as they have the right of way. Crosswalks do not give pedestrians the immediate right of way if they are approaching the crosswalk the same time a vehicle is.

Street corners: If there are no crosswalks, any street corner is a legal crossing area for pedestrians. The same rules apply for street corners as they do for crosswalks. It is advised to be cautious at street corners since drivers may not be as alert for pedestrians as they are when crosswalks approach. Always look both ways before crossing.

Intersections: Intersections are, of course, a place that pedestrians can cross, since they have street corners in the event a crosswalk is not there. It is noteworthy, though, that if an intersection has crosswalks on some roads and not others, only cross where crosswalks are, as that is the safest place to do so.
