Pedestrian Accidents and Vehicles

Our vehicles today are an amazing example of advanced technology with the idea of overall safety. Having sensors on the bumpers of our vehicles, designing them with better sightlines, having automatic brakes features to ensure that we don’t hit anything, and improved seatbelts and airbags all show just how far we’ve come to protect those within the vehicle we’re driving, with improvements even on these features happening every day.

Still, though, vehicles get into accidents with other vehicles, and sometimes, they get into accidents with people as well. When a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle, it’s important to look at all the reasons the accident happened. For many accidents, the driver is at fault because they either weren’t paying attention or state that they did not “see” the pedestrian, which can be frustrating for a pedestrian to hear. Still, this statement raises an important question: can pedestrians make themselves more visible to drivers on the road? The answer is simple: yes! There are a few things that pedestrians can do to improve their presence on the road for drivers to see, which will not only help to avoid a possible damaging accident, but will hopefully make pedestrians feel safer overall.

Some Ways to Improve Visibility for Pedestrians

As luck would have it, there are a few simple and easy tips for pedestrians to follow to help improve their presence on the street. Three of these simple tips includes:

How Pedestrians Can Improve Their Visibility to DriversWearing light colored clothing: Brightly colored or white clothing is incredibly visible on both sunny days and dark nights. During the day, you have more leeway since it’s easier to see you in the light, but at night, it’s recommended to wear clothing that is white or light in color that will reflect light more as cars drive by. This will make you more easily visible and easier to avoid.

Having reflective clothing or accessories: Reflective clothing has become more popular in the past few years with products typically being offered to runners or bikers. Still, many pedestrians can find this type of clothing around in stores and online to wear when they are out and about. This clothing uses reflective strips or paint to reflect lights from vehicles back to drivers, bringing pedestrians into sharp focus. This clothing makes not seeing pedestrians more difficult for drivers, and helps to decrease accidents.

Be where you should be: When a driver is maneuvering around the city, they expect to see pedestrians in certain places, which makes them cautious in those areas. Legally, pedestrians are only allowed to cross and use the street in certain areas and ways, so when pedestrians do not follow these laws, drivers can be caught off guard. It’s important for pedestrians to follow the laws set up for them while also expecting drivers to do the same. When everyone follows the rules and is where they should be, accidents decrease steadily over time.
